I dropped out of high school when I was 16 and “ran away from home.” I lived in a friend’s factory band space for two years until I could save enough money to travel a majority of the east coast. I regret nothing.

I have this head cannon about Ava, that she keeps a journal and catalogs all of the sacrifices she makes in life for her kids to read one day. To set an example of sorts, and let them know that no matter how hard times get living in Harlan County, there are ways to make something from nothing. I think Bowman’s abusive nature and losing her first child ultimately ruined the romantic idea of raising a family, but not all hope is lost.
